Danny Osborne was born in England in 1949 and studied at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art. He moved to Ireland in 1971 and he has lived and worked on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork ever since. Osborne frequently travels to the Arctic and he has also been involved in expeditions to the Andes and the Himalayas, where he has collected stone for his sculptural works. Known equally as a painter and a sculptor, Osborne’s work in all media is largely figurative and is produced as a result of the keen observation of the natural world. There is a sensitivity to his work, evident in his delicate tonal handling of oils and watercolours in paintings of the Arctic as much as in the fine grain of graphic woodblock prints and the careful carving and polishing of stone pieces.
Danny Osborne received the Sculpture Award at the 1974 Irish Exhibition of Living Art and an award for a film work at the International Film Festival of Mountaineering and Exploration in Italy in 1986. He has exhibited widely in group exhibitions including the IELA and the Oireachtas Exhibition and has had solo exhibitions with the Neptune Gallery, Dublin; Kilkenny Arts Week; and Cibeal in Co. Kerry. Osborne has also been commissioned to complete several major public artworks, most notably the Oscar Wilde Memorial in Merrion Square in Dublin and `First Breath` at Millennium Park in Kilrush, Co. Clare. His work is included in many private collections and in the public collections of AIB, the Arts Council of Ireland, Bord Fáilte, the Investment Bank of Ireland, Bank of Ireland and the Contemporary Irish Art Society.
